Yoga & Fashion

Yoga is defined as the physical, mental and spiritual practices or disciplines, originated in ancient India with a view to attain a state of permanent peace. Historians traced back thousands years ago to a place in Indus Valley, where ancient Indians displayed yoga poses on several seals. In the 1980s, yoga became popular across the Western world. However, its vogue-like fashionability is a recent and booming phenomenon.

Stores, like Lululemon, introduce series of yoga products every year. Based on a recent study, 30 million North Americans practice yoga, and the yoga products market is $27 billion each year.

Lululemon is know for its black stretch Astro pant. People commend it as brilliantly designed, able to fit and able to flatter the legs perfectly. Last year, Vancouver was ranked as the third worst-dressed cities in the world due to Lululemon pants.  After all, yoga pants are not a substitute for work clothes.

I’ve been practicing yoga since the age of 15 and I have never spent money on “professional” yoga clothing. I primarily  choose my yoga gear on the basis of being loose and practical. Yoga attire certainly doesn't have to be expensive and branded.

Fabric: I prefer cotton and linen for yoga clothes. These materials are light and can breath during exercises

Price: No need to spend your hard-earned money at an expensive retailer. A comfy t-shirt will do.

Design: Everyone knows their body best, and every woman wants to look great in the mirror during yoga practice. Choose a style of clothing that you find comfortable and doesn't over expose. Dark colours also work well as opposed to lighter fabrics that may run the risk of having sweat stains left behind.

Extra tips:

  • Loose tops are great, and even pack two if you can-- one for yoga and one for after.
  • Avoid showering right after the class. Showering will relax the muscles and stop the burning processes, so giving your muscles more time to work internally. Allowing sweat to naturally evaporate is also a free detoxification.
  • On that note, remember some products to freshen up if you decide to grab some tea or coffee with friends afterwards.
Hope it helps! NAMASTE...
